Objectives

The main objective of the program is for Chilean students to acquire a general overview of U.S. culture, history, and literature, and to broaden their capacity to engage critically, and theoretically, with American cultural texts (including literary texts, films, plays, songs, etc.). In the process of exploring and articulating U.S. themes, students will also improve their research, writing, and oral communication skills.  In terms of specific goals, the program contemplates five:

1. Students will become familiar with and understand the major cultural epochs of the United States, and the major figures, movements, and events that have come to define them.

2. Students will become familiar with and understand some of the basic theoretical and conceptual (and methodological) frameworks found in the disciplines of anthropology, philosophy, literary studies, and cultural studies.

3. Students will learn how to approach American cultural texts and apply those skills in the production of a creative writing project. Students will also learn how to integrate the knowledge and skills learned throughout the semester into their own local and professional contexts.

4. Students will improve their English language skills. They will significantly advance their writing skills and oral skills. Every class takes place in English.

5. Embracing and promoting cultural awareness and tolerance is an overarching goal of the program.
